AFS Student Chapter Competes in Casting Competition

The newly established student chapter of the American Foundry Society (AFS) competed in a Cast in Steel event held by the Steel Founders’ Society of American at CastExpo 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Southern’s AFS chapter fielded two student teams for the competition. The purpose of the competition was to design, manufacture, and test a cast steel weapon of the competition judges’ choosing for 2019 – a Viking ax! Ben Abbot, a master bladesmith from the popular TV series Forged in Fire, rated the axes highly. The testing included chopping through a piece of steel sheet and cutting through a rope.
