IT Students Win Big in the College Research Symposium

The 2023 PCEC student research symposium presented more than 150 posters on Friday, Apr. 21, 2023.
Supported by many industry partners, including Crider Foods, Georgia Innovation, Georgia Power,
Gulfstream, Hawk Measurement Systems, Kiewit, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and SALT (Southern
Automation Logistics & Technology). The symposium offered 11 awards in various engineering and
computing categories. Four students from the IT department received awards in computing categories.
These students include:
Helen Adesola, 1 st place award in the category – Southern Automation, Logistics & Technology
Computing Awards, with poster title: Securing Web Services (Rest Apis) against Software Vulnerabilities
using the AEP Approach (Advisor: Dr. Hayden Wimmer)


Damilola Elegwu, 3 rd place award in the category – Georgia Centers of Innovation, with poster
title: Comparative Analysis of Vulnerability Scanners for Effective Vulnerability Management (Advisor
Dr. Hayden Wimmer)


Lorna Kangethe, Outstanding Female Researcher (single award), with poster title: Network Intrusion
Detection System with Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) (Advisor: Dr. Hayden Wimmer)


Daniel Ukene, 1 st place award in the category – Gulfstream IT Team Award (Award for Outstanding
Research in IT, with poster title: Evaluating the performance of Containerized Webservers against web
servers on Virtual Machines using Bombardment and Siege (Advisor: Dr. Hayden Wimmer)


“Winning the award has been a surreal experience. I appreciate Dr. Wimmer for encouraging me to stick
with my interest when choosing a topic for this research.” Said Ukene, “Department professors are very
enthusiastic about teaching the program, also both faculty and staff are always available to provide
support whenever we call.”
Adesola added that “It’s an honor to have been recognized for the award. It has inspired and bolstered my
drive to achieve and keep striving to reach my goals.” Elegwu advocated that “the IT program at Georgia
Southern University has taught me valuable skills for life, one of which is how to find solutions to
problems and challenges.”  Kangethe further suggested that “the award is a good way to motivate
students. IT professors are great and so are their methods of teaching.”
