Congratulation to Dr. Chen For The Teaching Award

Congratulations to Dr. Lei Chen for the Faculty Award for Teaching at the Allen Paulson College of Engineering and Computing. This is the only award dedicated to a faculty member in the College who has been continuously demonstrating excellence in teaching.

At Georgia Southern, teaching is the most essential and fundamental responsibility of all faculty members. Teaching is beyond delivering knowledge and helping students gain skills; teaching is also using our professional experience as an example to guide students through their educational programs and prepare them for future careers and challenges. Dr. Chen considers that a great teacher is warm, accessible, enthusiastic, and caring, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Dr. Chen has been highly rated over the years at Georgia Southern. Students love his teaching methods bridging theories and practices. They greatly benefited from IT lab assignments and tasks designed and regularly updated by Dr. Chen. With his colleagues, Dr. Chen has been awarded the National Security Agency’s GenCyber grants twice to educate middle schoolers on cybersecurity and forensic investigation.

Serving as the Graduate Program Director for the Master of Science in IT program, Dr. Chen advises all MSIT students’ courses and programs. He also provides mentorship guiding students into future careers. In his career, Dr. Chen has supervised more than 45 master theses and projects. His student graduates in recent years have joined major IT companies such as CISCO or pursued doctoral programs in research universities. He also helped connect students with top IT companies, such as Google and LinkedIn, for internship and scholarship opportunities.

Dr. Chen cares about students and continuously encourages them; he has taken students to international conferences and visited top university campuses and companies, such as Stanford University and Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA. He has actively participated in and organized educational conferences and workshops.
