Local high schoolers explore engineering on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus

Approximately 85 students from Savannah and Chatham County area high schools visited Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus in Savannah to explore engineering with current Georgia Southern students and professors.

The University’s Eagle Engineering Ambassadors (EEA) program hosted three groups of high school students, who are considering a career in Engineering, in January, February and March. These groups included meetings of the local Engineering Explorers Post. 

The Savannah Engineering Explorers Post is part of Exploring, a national program that encourages young people from various backgrounds to explore life and career skills through immersive experiences and mentorship from community and business leaders.

EEA members assisted Priya Goeser, Ph.D., professor of mechanical engineering, and Thomas Murphy, Ph.D., professor of electrical and computer engineering, in hosting the on-campus meetings. Felix Hamza-Lup, Ph.D., professor of computer science, gave an overview of the program before EEA members guided the explorers through a hands-on Arduino kit activity designed by Murphy. Arduino kits contain hardware and online resources to introduce students to real-world STEM concepts.

Of the many career fields supported by Exploring, engineering is one of the most popular Explorer Post programs. Locally, engineering firms Hussey Gay Bell and Thomas & Hutton sponsor the Savannah Post by offering career mentoring and development during many meetings.
