The Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering & Computing held its Fall 2019 Convocation today, August 13, 2019. As is the annual tradition, Dean Mohammad Davoud presented awards for outstanding teaching, research and service to faculty, and staff member and advisor of the year (2018-19).

Dr. Salman Siddiqui, Electrical & Computer Engineering, received the Faculty Award for Teaching. His department chair writes that “Dr. Siddiqui is passionate about teaching, service, learning and student success. In all of his courses, Dr. Siddiqui provides high quality and clear instruction by having well-structured lectures with measurable learning outcomes.”

Dr. Francisco Cubas-Suazo, Civil Engineering & Construction, received the Faculty Award for Scholarly Activity. Over the past four years at Georgia Southern, Dr. Cubas-Suazo has submitted many research proposals, securing 16 awards in that time (10 external and 6 internal), worth over $1M. He has also published in several high-impact journals and conferences, with students as co-authors, and has presented with his graduate students more than 30 times in national conferences, invited lectures, and seminars.

Dr. Gustavo Maldonado, Civil Engineering & Construction, received the Faculty Award for Service. Dr. Maldonado is serving his third two-year term as a Service-Learning Faculty Fellow of the GS Office of Leadership and Community Engagement. He currently services as faculty advisor to the ASCE student chapter. Dr. Maldonado led an international service learning activity by conducting a joint class with the Universidad Anahuac Mayab in Merida, Mexico. The class created a 3D map of a Mayan temple for preservation purposes. Dr. Maldonado is very active in department-level, College-level, University-level and professional committees.

Mr. Andrew Michaud, Manufacturing Engineering, has been named Staff Member of the Year. Mr. Michaud is currently the lab supervisor for Manufacturing Engineering, but has previously served as lab supervisor for the former Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology, and the Department of Electrical Engineering. As lab supervisor for MfgE, he is responsible for purchasing decisions, as well as ordering, commissioning, and operating the equipment – as well as training others to use it safely. Mr. Michaud is always willing to help other labs and units of the College with projects as well.

Ms. Erica Colbert has been named Advisor of the Year. Ms. Colbert advises all of the College’s graduate students, as well as students in the WebBSIT program (and the new BIT-Online program). Ms. Colbert not only maintains up-to-date knowledge of all the programs she advises (six MS programs, now with Accelerated Bachelors-to-Masters programs; and the WebBSIT and BIT-Online programs), but she has done this while earning her Ph.D. She always maintains focus on her students’ needs.
