Dr. Valentin Soloiu’s Biography:

SoloiuAwardValentin Soloiu, Ph.D., is the Allen E. Paulson Renewable Energy Distinguished Chair, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering and Information Technology. Dr. Soloiu came to Georgia Southern University in the summer of 2008, while previously being a research professor at Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and has 30 years of research and teaching at the university level. In Georgia Southern University, his research focuses on engine low-temperature combustion through reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI). RCCI is an innovative technology that involves combustion of lean mixtures obtained by a port fuel injection of a low reactivity fuel and a direct injection of a high reactivity fuel. Dr. Soloiu is the only researcher in the world using biofuels for RCCI. RCCI reduces the in-cylinder temperature created during combustion which restricts the formulation of harmful emissions such as particulate matter and nitrous oxides. Since his arrival at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Soloiu has demonstrated excellence in research by winning 12 federal and state grants totaling $1 million. The federal grants were awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation – twice, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Soloiu developed and is leading the largest state of the art, alternative fuels combustion and emissions with Mie scattering lasers capabilities laboratory in the Southeast of U.S. As a result of his works in Georgia Southern, Dr. Soloiu has published 12 peer-reviewed journal articles and 32 peer-reviewed conference proceedings and received 19 awards for research. In 2013, his ground-breaking research won the EPA P3 National prize and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ first prize in Washington D.C. Dr. Soloiu currently serves as the PI and the National Director for the NSF REU: “Undergraduate Research in Green Engineering New Transportation Technologies (URGENTT)” and PI for EPA Grant: “Low Temperature Combustion with Reduced PM and NOx Emissions, Achieved by n-Butanol in-Port Injected in an Omnivorous Diesel Engine”.
