NSF-REU Research Program in ME/CEIT has started under prodigious auspices
Dr. Soloiu, the Allen E. Paulson Distinguished Chair, has been awarded $360,000 by the NSF for his research in advanced combustion and emissions technologies. Under the framework of this program, “REU Site: Undergraduate Research in Green-Engineered New Transportation Technologies (URGENTT)” the brightest students from 25 universities from across the country will be selected to do research in hybrid combustion technologies, in Mechanical Engineering Dept. / College of Engineering and IT.
The Allen E. Paulson Research Laboratory for Renewable Energy and Engines Combustion in ME offers summer-term interdisciplinary research experiences for engineering undergraduate students thus becoming the research hub of the United States in advanced combustion technologies for the next three years. The program aims to increase students’ interest in conducting fundamental research along with interdisciplinary concepts through hands-on-learning; STEM problem-solving skills and ability to apply them to research; independence as well as ability to collaborate effectively as part of a highly diverse team; and communication competence at both the interpersonal and presentational level.
The research problem is immediately significant and requires multidisciplinary strategies coordinated by Dr. Soloiu and contributed by 8 faculty from 5 departments in 3 colleges of the university. The program provides stipends to 10 students for 10 weeks each summer from 2014 to 2016. They develop an individual research and project, delineating their expected contribution to the assigned team. All participants attend lectures, seminars, workshops & labs and industrial visits to develop their knowledge of, and skills in energy, research methods, and technical writing.
